The most ambitious Red-Hot Lava Chamber Music Festival to date, Festival 2003 was a great success, from the two chamber music concerts to the eight educational events and a recording session. The Festival Players performed works by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Khachaturian, J.s. Bach/Busoni, Faure, Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb and Norman Foster to enthusiastic crowds at Atherton Performing Arts Studio and the Academy Doris Duke Theater.
Approximately 100 students, ranging in age from 8 to 18 participated in the educational events, playing violin, viola, cello, bass and piano. Many others attended, benefitting by watching and listening. Numerous local music teachers also had an opportunity to learn by attending the Festival events and talking with the Festival Players.
Also during this Festival, the Festival Players completed a studio recording of Na Iwi O Pele by University of Hawaii composition professor Donald Womack, who produced the recording. The work was commissioned by the Players and premiered during Festival 2001.
